So many had come and followed Jesus by the time of this encounter with a rich man. All of Jesus’ disciples had left much to be with him. The journey had not been easy for any of them. If you know Jesus, you know that Jesus can be difficult to live with. He has a perilous way of causing confusion, risk, misunder- standing, and even fear.
Now, here is a man in Mark 10 who comes face-to- face with Jesus. This man wants to impress Jesus with a show of graciousness and generosity. Only, Jesus wasn’t having it. In hearing how much it costs to be a disciple (give up your wealth!), the man slumps away sorrowfully. Did you know that this is the only call story in the Gospel in which someone refuses to fol-
low Jesus? The point is this...Jesus offers us free- dom. He releases us from that which enslaves us. For the man in this story, he is chained to his wealth. What might be your entrapment? Jesus has his hands out and asks us to let go and follow him. Will we?
Peace, Pastor Gary
