Our families, no matter how wonderful and loving, just can’t be up to the task of shaping us as Christians. In baptism the congregation pledges to help raise that person. Same is true at Confirmation, Commissioning, Installations, and Ordination. The church pledges to stand with others on their journeys and commitments. The saying goes that we are saved by faith alone, but never by a faith that is alone. We need each other.
Christians believe that we are never born just once. We must be born again, and again, and again. By God’s grace we are more than anyone can determine for us. We are freed from restrictions placed on us by our family of origin. God can grab us and wrestle with us, and take us places we had not dreamed possible.
As the Bible puts it, think of God as a potter and we are the clay. We are molded by God’s fingers. Isn’t it great to be caught up in the adventure called the family of God?
