Yesterday, we were with Jesus in the temple of Jerusalem (see Matthew 21). The conversation between Jesus and the chief priests gets quite heated. These elders just don’t believe that Jesus has the authority to be talking as he does. What makes him so special, they ask. Jesus answers by telling the story of a vineyard owner who loves his vineyard to the point of letting the workers kill his son. The message is clear…Jesus will be killed as the son of God.
Our singular hope, our only confidence, is that in our relationship with God, God has a relationship with us. In Christ, God has done for us what we could not do for ourselves. Jesus has come to us, embraced us and forgiven us, giving us our sole answer for life and life beyond death. Our saving God keeps saving us, keeps working in us, through God’s sanctifying grace. Or as Paul said in Philippians, “The One who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus.” Amen to that!
