Years ago, when I was playing football in high school, our team would run laps around the field to “cool down.” Some cool down!! So, there we were strung out in a single line trying to keep up with everyone. Just for “fun” the coach would bark at the last runner to sprint past his teammates to the front of the pack. The moment the last runner became the lead runner, the next teammate at the end had to do the same thing. And on it went. Over and over again, the first was to be the last and the last, first. I can still hear my coach bellow across the field, “Put some heart into it!!” It was exhausting, but it was very exhilarating. It built up character, and it built up a team spirit.
Do you experience giving to our church as exhausting or exhilarating? I hope exhilarating! Think of yourself as a leader when you give to our church. It’s good for you and it’s good for our church. This church of ours is our spiritual home. It needs all of our heart. Surprise yourself this year, and next year, by giving more than you usually do. Re-discover the exhilaration of taking the lead. Jesus was given to us so that we might “run this race” with confidence and joy. After all, he once said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart.”
Peace, Pastor Gary
