As it has been said, the church doesn’t have a mission but rather God’s mission has a church. More specifically, God has Dayton Avenue Presbyterian Church! Though Jesus could accomplish his goals without us, God in Christ has come alongside us with a simple, “Come and follow me.” But beyond that, Jesus wants us to take the initiative to be more than followers, but actual leaders. We are a “come and go” church; a place to be fed and then led. We put on our aprons after we take off our bibs.
There is a question lurking for us behind these texts in Matthew. Will we allow the Holy Spirit to prod us today, as it once prodded the early disciples? Or will we hunker down and play it safe? It takes a bit of a risk to offer a cup of water to someone else. We can take a chance and refresh people with love, and forgiveness, and an act of kindness. We drink God’s mercy, and can return it by offering such mercy to the parched and lonely. Isn’t it nice to know that being a disciple doesn’t have to be too complicated?
