And so, the story begins. This is the day we get our first real glimpse of who Jesus really is according to scripture. Who is he? John introduced Jesus as a mighty one, a Savior, and a sign of the coming reign of God. Jesus was coming with a baptism of fire and spirit! When the baptism began, the heavens opened, there was a voice from above, and a vision of the Holy Spirit descended like a dove. Heaven and earth touched. Sometimes it seems like there is a gulf between us and God. But at Jesus’ baptism, there is traffic between here and there. God is revealed through Jesus. “This is my beloved son,” God declares.
There is a lot going on in early Matthew. The central point at Jesus’ baptism is that here is a new beginning. Call it the inauguration of Jesus’ mission. The world would never be the same. Our own baptisms mark the beginning of our life in Christian community. Jesus’ baptism marks the start of the entire Christian era!
So, the season of Epiphany has come. We are privileged to walk with Jesus as he reveals himself in the coming year. We will learn once again what it is to be called by the name of Christian. Jesus has a vision, we read today. And guess who gets to be part of it!
Peace, Pastor Gary.
