John’s message is a simple one. “Prepare the way of the Lord, and make his paths straight.” Someone is coming, someone so special that it is not enough to hang around waiting for him to come. It is time to get ready, to prepare the way, so that when Jesus comes he can walk right into our doors.
Most of my sermons are about, “God loves you just the way you are; promise that you’ll never change a thing.” But this isn’t what John came to proclaim. You and I know that we need help. We need forgiveness. We need Jesus. In our better moments, we know that not all is well with us. Only a preacher like John tells the truth. And the truth is what sets us free.
We can be honest about darkness, about defeat, because we have an honest hope. We can admit that we need some future not solely based on our own devising. We can have honest hope because we believe that God made our situation one of God’s. God draws near. Fear not, we read in Advent. Our God reigns.
Therefore, we have hope!
Peace, Pastor Gary
