God has created us not only to be receivers but also to be givers. In giving we experience our best selves. It’s like we share in some of the same graciousness and creativity with which God has so generously blessed our lives. Hmm…I wonder. Are we most like God when we give to others? One of the ways we master wealth is through stewardship in our church life. Following Jesus means that we are commanded to deal with wealth as Jesus deals with wealth. Put our money where our Jesus is!
So Jesus coaches us to put our wealth to good practice. In giving, we put our money to good use. We show that we use our money rather than our money uses us. Jesus warns us in yesterday’s story that prosperity can breed apathy. Self-indulgent lifestyles may cause blindness to the needs of others. Here’s the point…In hoarding much, we can lose sight of our absolute poverty apart from Jesus. Wrapped up in the busyness of our own lives, we can forget to care for others.
Each of us must follow Jesus for ourselves. We may never have to face the decision to die for our faith, but every day we face the decision whether we will live for it.
