But more than that, Mark wants to tell us that when the world does rise up to be the world, Jesus Christ rises up from the dead. Someone can nail Jesus to a cross, but Jesus cannot be nailed down. When the world is busy being the world, Jesus Christ is busy being the Lord! As Luther wrote 500 years, “the body they may kill/God’s truth abideth still/his kingdom is forever.”
In reflecting on John’s death, I had to ask myself,” When’s the last time I’ve been threatened because I told God’s truth?” How about you? When have you ever stood up and told the truth that people didn’t want to hear? The church is meant to be a place not only of comfort, but also a place of truth. Not truth tied to any political party, but truth tied to God. Here in the languid days of sum- mer, it’s a good time to be reminded of the potential costs of following Jesus.
