Do you find it odd that Jesus invited the disciples to sail into a storm? Perhaps it doesn’t strike you to be that unusual. After all, you are probably like me and most Christians. We have all been invited by Jesus to get into his boat and test the waters at some point(s) in our life. That’s the adventure of being a follower of Jesus. When people say that they have taken Jesus into their heart, I think, “You haven’t taken Jesus any- where; he takes you!” And the places we have gone! Maybe it was on a mission trip; maybe it was to church for a project; maybe it was to some protest out on the street. Jesus is a living, active, free God who leads us to other places than just still waters.
Sometimes faith means that we believe Jesus does make us lie down in green pastures. Other times we are with him in wastelands. Sometimes he leads us besides still waters; then there are times when he invites us to sail with him in a storm. The point is that we are in the boat! We are out of the harbor and into the unknown deep. But we stay in the boat! Maybe, when all is said and done, that is true faith. The faith that Jesus asked of the disciples that day on Lake Galilee.
